Local weapons master, defense attorney shares details on Alec Baldwin’s new indictment

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Alec Baldwin’s lawyer says they will fight and they will win.

It came after Baldwin was charged with first degree murder for the 2021 shooting death of a movie star on the set of the movie, “Rust.”

Baldwin was holding the shotgun when a round was fired, killing Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

A master of arms, also known as an armorer, who works on film sets in Pittsburgh told KDKA that his job is to manage weapons and ammo, but nothing else.

He and a lawyer shared their thoughts on charges related to the accident on the set of “Rust.”

“When I heard about this incident, it was like, this is a complete breakdown of any kind of security,” said weapons master Todd Barton.

Barton works several times a year as a weapons master on film sets in the greater Pittsburgh region, and back in October 2021, he could not believe what had happened in a rehearsal ” Rust” in Santa Fe, Calif.

“It’s all very regulated and that’s the way it should be done,” Barton added.

When Alec Baldwin fired a loaded gun, killing actress Halyna Hutchens and director Joel Souza, more than a year later, that incident led to criminal charges being filed. on Thursday by lawyers in Santa Fe, with Baldwin and Baldwin. the movie armorer or master of weapons, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has been charged with intentional homicide.

“It means that there is no intent, but criminal negligence,” said defense attorney Phil Dilucente.

Dilucente said that he is not surprised by the charges, but it will take a long time for the public prosecutors to make a decision.

“It’s quite surprising, because the divorce with the wife of the deceased man, the wife, was settled months and months ago,” Dilucente added.

He thinks that ballistics and interviews with many people on the set take time. At this point, he is not predicting an outcome when the case goes to trial, but he does use the past to predict the future regarding Baldwin’s fate.

“There have been times throughout the history of Hollywood when actors have been charged with crimes, one, not convicted, or two, convicted and it’s a very light sentence. But it’s too early to say.”

As for Barton?

“I think both of them will be in jail, for a very short time.”

If the case goes to trial and both are convicted, Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed face up to 18 months in prison.

Earlier Thursday, prosecutors reached a plea deal with the film’s assistant director for reckless use of a deadly weapon.
