COLUMBIA, SC – With tax season right around the corner, many may qualify for a earned income tax credit and it is not known.
Of the Public Service started a campaign to help Americans use the income from the income tax.
The IRS says people who have experienced a major life change, such as their marital status or having a baby, may qualify.
According to the IRS, the income Income tax credit it is for some people who work and have low incomes. Often this will reduce the tax owed and may even result in a refund.
“If you qualify under the federal guidelines, it will automatically be compared to your state tax return,” said Tom Waring with April Taxes.
Last year the IRS said 31 million eligible workers and families received about $64 billion in tax revenue. The total amount is over $2000.
But Waring said local taxpayers may be better off in South Carolina this year
“In 2022 the lawmakers passed an increase in the percentage that goes up to I think one hundred and 25, 1.25 percent in the coming years,” said Waring.
And the income from the income tax can be useful because this year there are no sick deductions, in some cases, which causes small refunds.
“All the incentives have been passed and gone. There is no longer a chance that you will have to adjust your taxes,” he said.
To qualify for the income tax the IRS said you must do $59,187 or less last year.
They estimate that about 20% of eligible taxpayers are unable to take advantage of the tax credit.
