What you need to assemble your pc for computer jobs at home.
(While working on this I realized I could add more detail to the requirements so I’m writing two articles instead of one. This one is where I cover the hardware. The second article will give you the software options for your work at home business).
First of all, there is no use on looking for a computer job at home if you don’t own a computer. Get credit or borrow some money and buy it, look for one on the flea market, with the neighbors, family, friends, public schools or libraries, internet cafe, etc.
You have to your advantage that your clients won’t know what kind of environment nor what kind of equipment you’re working on, so forget aesthetics. That old monster standing on your living room just need to be operational and able to keep with the job. The minimum requirements are:
– a low capacity hard drive, maybe 80 gigabytes, to store your programs and your work;
– 512 megabytes of RAM (that’s the memory available to run programs WHILE the computer is on);
– a compact disc or dvd reader;
– networking equipment, at least an internal network card;
– a CRT Monitor is cheap, not yet obsolete, and does the job.
– invest in a new mouse and keyboard; they´re not expensive.
Expect to pay around 60-80 dollars for the parts I mentioned above. If you care to look further, there is a chance you can pay as little as 30 dollars.
I´m giving you specs that are rather old at the time I´m writing this (Dec. 2009). Still, computer shops are full with parts that they keep from old computers that stay almost unused. You´ll probably have to pay a bit more, around $200 dollars for a whole computer, but you´ll get it assembled by expert hands and you also a get a warranty.
If you get your computer assembled on a pc shop, your low cost computer will be between $200 and $300 dollars, and should at least include the following:
– a bigger hard disk
– more and faster ram, at least 1 gigabyte
– a video disc player or recorder
– a network card
– an integrated sound system
– your fancy LCD display
– a mouse and a keyboard
Maybe you want to spend more than $400 dollars, in that case, you will get more space on your hard disk, more gigabytes of RAM – this is always a plus -, definitely a DVD recorder, one microphone, maybe wireless, speakers and/or headphones or both, you choose. Now that you are willing to spend a little more, your choices now include a small laptop, with the obvious advantage of being able to carry it with you anywhere you go and do presentations to your clients.
You need something to get your work done, so don’t be discouraged if your computer doesn’t look like the ones you see on magazine or tv ads. The quality of your work relies more on making good and timely deliveries. Measure yourself, and do what you can to improve.
But, get yourself a computer. Come on, you’re almost there!
