Are You Becoming A Webaholic Addict?

Don’t scoff, it’s a true addiction, and we might all be guilty of being a “web-aholic” to some degree.

I’ve been working and living with computers for almost 20 years! Never realized just how dependent I’ve become, that is, until my computer isn’t feeling well. When my computer isn’t working up to par, or has totally crashed, life seems to, virtually, stand still. I’m all alone! No keyboard, no screen, I’m at a loss! Now, how did this happen? How did we let this contraption take over our lives? We can’t function without our trusty computer.

Recently, I’ve been learning to develop and set up websites. I’ve bonded, completely and entirely, with this electronic box and all its ugly and mile-long wires. I realize, progress is necessary and can be a wonderful thing. We can learn to be better organized and efficient. Didn’t I once hear that computers would help save trees because with everything in our hard drives, there would be no need to have clunky space-eating file cabinets and a paperless office!! Well, hardy-har-har, wasn’t that a joke? Not only do we use more paper, but now we have double and triple the amount of folders filled with paper! We buy more paper, print more, and shred more, which if we don’t recycle, this means the landfills are mushrooming.

I’ve ventured into the cyberspace so many times, it’s become my best friend. There’s no limit to what you can find and do on the Internet. Every commodity you can think of is available with just a tap of the key. If you have a bank or credit card, you could just about survive without the outside world – well, except for the electric company.

So, with this in mind, I decided to build and business and earn my living on line. I’m become so intimately dependent on my electronic friend, that all but my closest of close relationships and needs have been tossed by the wayside. Me and my computer have become joined at the hip! The world of uploading, downloading computer games, copy/paste, move, transport, save as techniques have become the norm. Back links, SEO, optimization, blogging, FTP, domains, and website tools dance in my dreams. On clipboards, on links insertion, on website promotion tools, and keywords I cry! (Oh, brother!)

Working on a computer greatly diminishes the need to converse with another ‘living’ person. Everything can be done on your computer – well, okay, maybe not everything. But, you can buy food, clothing, cars, furniture, and houses. You can even find a lover on line. You can play poker, golf, go bowling, learn yoga, and get physically fit get free wii downloads. It seems there is nothing you can’t find on the computer, with just a click of the mouse.

I got two websites up and running — when do the searches and clicks become a reality? Google says it takes patience. Patience is a dream killer! Why do we need to be patient in a world of “instant gratification?” Isn’t patience and instant access to anywhere in the world contradictory? One little click, and I’m there! Who needs or wants to be patient anymore?.

So, here I sit with the big “white-screened” eye staring back at me. I’m thinking it’s taken on a life of its own, perhaps one day it will develop a beating heart and program a will of its own. Perhaps computers are comprising more than data, perhaps they’re collecting people’s blood; sucking it right out of our fingertips! When they accumulate the right amount of our mortal souls, they might learn how to point-and-click on us!

Well, my pointer is calling, the cursor is demanding attention, and the message alert is chiming, so I’ve got to go! Gotta get back out there in cyberspace, search for a niche, and become one, once again, with my beloved (and sometimes hated) computer.

Oh, by the way, there is no known cure for Web-aholicism!
