Operating real businesses from your home can be the most efficient means of running a small business or, of course, it could be a most inefficient method. From my twenty years experience the difference lies in your own perception and projection.

Your perception will dictate how you “see” the management of the business and how important it is to you to run it like the business it is. This significance you place on the efficient management of your business will then project to others in your home and those who visit your office. Some years ago at a writers conference, Dennis Hensley, one of the speakers, told a story about working from home with a humorous illustration: I asked Sally (one of the well known and successful writers at this conference) how she deals with this issue of working at home. I told her the biggest problem now, though, was learning to walk in those high heels.”

Our own perception of how important our work is will be evidenced by how efficiently we work from the home. Am I building real home based businesses or just playing games?

You must recognize the importance of scheduling your time and accomplishing everything you have purposed for the day. When you do this, your family members or visitors to your office will tend to do the same.

If you allow household interruptions to throw the day out of whack then those around you will be colluding with you to do just that! You need to set the tone for your

Each family must find their own balance in this respect, but the balance must be weighted towards the concept that, “He or She isn’t home right now but has gone to the office.”

I now have grandchildren around the house and even at 30 months they understand this. Again, I always stop and have him sit on my lap when he does come in but he knows its special when he comes.

Real Home Based Businesses Require Focus

Don’t get distracted by the side issues that may seem at the moment to be urgent. It all happens too easily to the home based business person. Decide that you are going to make this thing work and that what you are doing is important and significant or go back to the corporate world and hope they have a place for you there. Many people assume that work at home mom have it simple; however, if any of those people have ever lived a day as a work from home mom they would know it isn’t so easy. There are children to look out of, a house to clean, a dog to stroll, groceries to buy, dinner to cook and dishes to wash. Oh, and then there’s that small business to work!

It may not be simple, but it isn’t impossible, either. By using some straightforward time management tricks, a work at home mom can get time to “get it all done!” One thing every work from home mom should have is a planner. Plan your family time first! Then schedule in the time you are going to work your small business. Once you have your “work time” scheduled, make it a main concern to stay focused on your business during those hours. It is very easy to postpone when you are a work from home mom.

If your work requests you to do many special tasks, try to group related tasks together. For example, if you are in a direct sales small business and you have a team under you, choose one day to be your “training day”. As an alternative of helping different team members throughout the week, schedule all of your mentoring sessions for one day. Keep back an hour in the morning and an hour in the late afternoon to answer back to email and/or return phone calls. By scheduling that time in, you will find that you are able to get further work done and feel less scattered.

You might also think outsourcing some of your activities. If you find that you are spending extra time on responding to email, returning phone calls, or updating your website, appoint a virtual assistant to do those tasks for you. This will free your time up to work on your business, and by spending more time on the parts of your business that actually bring in money, you will be able to grow your profits.

You can also save time by setting aside a block of time each week to do your “regular” responsibilities, such as grocery shopping. If you plan your meals for the week and go to the grocery store once, you will save lots of time during the week by not taking those daily “quick trips to the market”. And while you are preparation your meals, try to plan a few “cook once, eat twice” days. For example, you can plan on having spaghetti on Monday and tacos on Tuesday. So, on Monday, brown the hamburger you will need for both days. On Tuesday, half of your work will already be done. And if you are making a meatloaf or lasagna, make two and freeze one for later.

Most importantly, do not feel as if you have to do it all by yourself. You are not a super hero. If you have a spouse or significant other, ask them to chip in on household chores. Kids love to help out, and depending on their ages, there are many things they can do. And when it is all said and done, don’t forget to take out some time for yourself. Everyone needs a weekend away– work from home mom included!
